Physical Therapy Student Kits

Physical Therapy programs and/or schools often require their students to get a Physical Therapy (PT) Student Kit. The standard PT Student Kit comes with the following items:

4. A Taylor Hammer or Reflex Hammer
5. Pocket Aneroid Sphygmomanometer

The standard PT Student Kits are normally 9-piece kits with the above mentioned items. Some kits come with a carrying case or a drawstring bag. Below is a description of each of the 9 items that are usually found in a PT Student Kit.

Goniometer

A goniometer in the field of physical therapy is a device used to measure a joints range of motion (ROM). A goniometer has two arms - one that is meant to be stationary and one that is moveable. Both arms are hinged together. Each arm is positioned on the body with the center of the goniometer aligned with the joint that is being measured. Goniometers in PT Student Kits come in either 12" 360° Clear Plastic Goniometer,  6" 180° Clear Plastic Goniometer, or both.

Absolute+Axis Attachment

An Absolute+Axis Attachment is a removable attachment for a plastic goniometer. When attached to the end of one of the goniometer arms, a standard goniometer then becomes an absolute+axis goniometer. The purpose of this attachment is to establish a true vertical and horizontal starting point for a measurement.

Taylor Hammer or Reflex Hamer

A Taylor Hamer also know as a Reflex Hammer is designed to test muscle and tendon reflexes. This medical instrument was developed by neurologist John Madison Taylor hence the name. The design of the hammer helps to elicit patellar reflexes as well as myotatic reflexes. The hammer handle features a tapered tip in order to elicit the plantar reflex.

Pocket Aneroid Sphygmomanometer

A pocket aneroid sphygmomanometer is also know as a blood pressure gauge and cuff system. It is designed to measure blood pressure with manual inflation, which is ideal for, PTs, medical professionals and caregivers. 

Dual-head Stethoscope

A dual head stethoscope allows the user to listen to different sound frequencies. The cup side is designed to listen to low frequency lung sounds. The opposite side (flat side) is designed to listen to high frequency heart sounds.

Woven Measurement Tape

A woven measurement tape is a soft tape measure that can be wrapped around body parts in order to get a measurement. Woven measurement taps for physical therapy often wined up into a device for convenient storage.

24-hour Electric Stopwatch/Watch Combination

A 24-hour Electric Stopwatch/Watch Combination is for timing exercises or to asses speed in patients as they go through physical therapy.

Gait Belt

A gait belt also known as a transfer belt is designed to be put on a patient who has mobility issues. This is a device that can be used to help transfer patients safely from a standing position to sitting positions in a wheelchair.
